Hachez makes some fantastic German chocolates. We last reviewed their Strawberry and pepper dark chocolate, and just recently found this one. Again, their combination of Ecuadorian cocoa, and fruit prove to be an interesting mix.
This German chocolate is smooth, creamy and rich – 77% cocoa – and the blueberry is just enough of a subtle hint to offset the bitterness of the dark chocolate. The crunchiness of the nibs holds everything together nicely.
But, not to be overly critical: it’s almost too dark – the blueberry is almost not enough.

As soon as we tear the trademark gold foil open, we can smell the orange – yummy. What’s interesting about this one is the initial orange note is the high sweet orange, more aromatic, but then as the chocolate dissolves, you get the deeper, heartier orange flavor and mouthfeel within the chocolate. As you would expect from a Godiva gourmet bar, this is superbly smooth and almost too rich; this is expected from a 50% dark chocolate. You get the smoothness like a milk chocolate, and the deeper bass notes of a dark chocolate, and all of this enveloped in orange rind flavor.
Of course, I’d get this one again, but this is really an indulgent chocolate, almost too sweet to have too often.

Here’s a nice, solid, well-made chocolate bar to satisfy your chocolate craving, while browsing your local IKEA. Sure, we’ve done the obligatory swedish meatballs and macaroni and cheese for lunch many times with the kids. On our most recent excursion, we noticed a case (and I do mean an IKEA case – 6 bars wide, 2 foot deep) of chocolate bars, and decided to try some for dessert. What a deal – 3 bars for $2.50, or $0.99 each – this bar easily blows away some of the more expensive plain dark chocolate bars we’ve tried recently.
This has a nice, deep rich flavor, with 60% cocoa, and its label denotes its origin from Germany. So the question for us is, what German chocolate maker makes this on the side for IKEA? I think I might take a minute and email them to see what other flavors they might consider besides dark and milk. Ligonberry and chili, perhaps?
Five-year-old: “a little spicy, tastes a little sour, smooth and a little milky. [Sweetness?] Just right.”

Strawberry and pepper? German dark chocolate? Sounded interesting.

Using Ecuadorian dark chocolate, this is a mildly bitter, dark, not overly sweet chocolate. Very smooth, full-flavored, bittersweet chocolate. We think while the pepper is just about right, the strawberry could stand to be a little more prominent. As it is, it has just a hint of strawberry (1.5%) which floats to the top as it melts in your mouth, and the pepper holds the bottom down. This is indeed a “superior mild dark chocolate.”

Two year old’s reaction: shakes head vigorously and succinctly says “no.”

Four year old: “a little salty, tastes like grapes, a little bitter and creamy.”
