Fortnum & Mason Chocolate no. 37: mexican mole spice

February 27, 2014 / 0 comments

Another trophy from England, thanks to awesome friends, this is a house brand chocolate that’s an interesting take on Mexican chocolate.

Menakao Truly Madagascar Dark Chocolate 70% Bird Chili

February 25, 2014 / 0 comments

First bite of this bar, (all the way from the UK via awesome friends!) and we were practically stupefied by how awesome this was. And, we realized that Madegascar is the next up-and-coming chocolate country, giving South America a run for the money.

Lindt Extra fine dark chocolate infused with red chili

February 2, 2014 / 0 comments

As written elsewhere, we’ve yet to be disappointed with any of the fine chocolates from Lindt. (However, we are extremely curious as to what constitutes ‘fine dark chocolate’ and what is ‘extra fine dark chocolate.’)

Lake Champlain Spicy Aztec

January 11, 2014 / 0 comments

Another of our favorite chocolatiers, Lake Champlain has a line of organic chocolate, which includes this fantastic bar: “An unexpected blend of spicy cayenne, crunchy pumpkin seeds, and fragrant cinnamon…” This has a fantastic mouthfeel – more creamy and sweet than we’d expect. As soon as your mouth acclimates to the melting chocolate consistency, you…

Theo Organic Spicy Chile Dark Chocolate

January 4, 2014 / 0 comments

We’ve had other chocolates from Theo, from their 3400 Phinney line. Nice initial mouthfeel, even with the slightest bit of grittiness at the outset, but it then melts quickly and smoothly. We expected more sweetness, but was pleasantly surprised at the sultry, darker bitterness that came through. The heat from chili and cayenne starts to…

Taza Chipotle Chili Chocolate Mexicano

December 21, 2013 / 0 comments

This was a chocolate on our wish-to-try list recently, and finally picked up a bar. In Somerville, MA, (Suhmahville) these chocolatiers use and grind organic cocao beans using Oaxacan stone mills, in a traditional mexican-style process.

Madécasse Madagascar’s Hottest Secret Cinnamon & Sakay

November 5, 2013 / 0 comments

Now here’s one of the more interesting bars we’ve come across recently: another chocolate supporting of cacao farmers (like Equal Exchange‘s line, but this reminded me a lot of the spicy szechuan bar from a while back.)

Equal Exchange Lemon Ginger chocolate with Black Pepper

August 13, 2013 / 0 comments

Equal Exchange has surprised us with some of the chocolate they’re putting out: between this and their hot chocolate mix, we are some happy spicy chocolate fans. Combine with their coffee, and it’s even better, and you can feel good about getting your spicy on.

Chili peppered chocolate… ice cream!

June 18, 2013 / 0 comments

It sounds so simple: Thick, creamy, semi-sweet chocolate ice cream. Add ancho and chipotle peppers. Touch of cinnamon. On paper, it looks easy. This sounds clichéd, I realize, but this may be, finally, some of the best chili chocolate ice cream from Philly I’ve tried so far. Yes, I’ve requested the shake makers at Max…

Dolfin Chocolat Au Lait Au Hot Masala

December 16, 2009 / 0 comments

Dolfin is a fantabulous Belgian chocolate maker. They have a number of interesting sounding chocolates, so on a recent trip to NYC we picked a couple up to try. Two words made this an easy pick: hot masala.

Chuao Firecracker

December 16, 2009 / 1 comment

No bones about it, the folks at Chuao make some really good chocolates. We especially love the Spicy Maya. But this one folks, this might actually have too much going on.

Café Tasse Noir Poivre de Szechuan

December 16, 2009 / 0 comments

Among the many Belgian chocolates I recently found at Chelsea Market Basket, this was one of the most interesting I tried. Now, it’s important to note that I say interesting – it is not my favorite, but I am glad I got to try this.

Casa Don Puglisi Chilli Modicana Chocolate

November 29, 2009 / 0 comments

This was an interesting find – kudos to Chelsea Market Baskets in New York City for the recommendation. Made in Italy, in the laboratorio Don Puglisi, it comes in a plain wrapper, tied with a red string, and a card:

Chuao Spicy Maya

September 11, 2008 / 0 comments

Heaven in a bar? here it is: cocoa, cinnamon, spices, chilies perfectly blended together. Short and sweet: perfect sweetness, creamy chocolate, complex character from cinnamon and chilies. These guys from Carlsbad, California make a damn good chocolate. We picked this up in Wegman’s, where it was significantly higher in price than other bars, but I…

Chocolove: Chilies & Cherries in Dark Chocolate

September 11, 2008 / 0 comments

This is helluva nice bar – great balance between the chili peppers and the intensely sweet cherries. If you’ll recall, these guys from Boulder made an Almonds & Cherries bar we reviewed (and liked), so our first question is: are these Michigan cherries? Or they from somewhere else? Never mind the cherries – it’s the…
