Clos Mimi 2005 “petite rousse” Syrah

January 11, 2008 / 0 comments

Light, fruity syrah with simple bouquet. It has a light taste, ever so slightly spicy, and on the finish I could swear there’s a little mint – spearmint? This is a good afternoon before-the-barbecue red – this could go well with burgers but it’s a bit too light for the main course (or at least,…

Black Opal Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

January 11, 2008 / 0 comments

label: “…packed with ripe black cherry characteristics and a smooth, soft taste…” This is a Cabernet that tastes very solid and mature – almost more plum than cherry. A little hint of pepper, as though there were a Cab Franc struggling to get out. Very smooth, great mouthfeel. This is a nice wine to enjoy…

Champagne: Domaine Ste. Michelle Extra Dry

January 1, 2008 / 0 comments

Lovely, lightest golden color. No ‘winey’ aftertaste. Overwhelming favorite from the group – complex nose with many fruits. Difficult to compare to bruts, a completely different style of champagne. Up next: comparison to other Ste. Michelles and a head-to-head with Veuve Clicquot, the heavyweight champ. Bubble taste not as refined as the Moët, larger, coarser…

Champagne: Piper Heidsieck Brut

January 1, 2008 / 0 comments

Light gold color. On opening, tasted ‘funny’ – slight chemical or artificial odor? Sweetest tasting brut in the bunch, but also had strongest bitter aftertaste. Driest, crispest taste – sweet hints of apple on nose. Generally liked least from tasting group. Bubble taste: not nearly as refined feeling as the Moët. Overall: disappointingly bitter.

Champagne: Moet & Chandon White Star

January 1, 2008 / 0 comments

Medium-light golden color – dry lemon taste. Tasters had varying opinions, but generally fair. Slightly bitter aftertaste. Bubble taste (the bubbly version of mouth-feel) was much smoother, finer, refined feel. Overall: solid, well-crafted; a safe favorite.

Vosges – Red Fire Bar

December 31, 2007 / 0 comments

Chocolate intended for Aztecs. Delicious. Dark chocolate with a slow-building ancho and chipotle chili undertone. Cinnamon nicely bridges the spice with the chocolate, and fills the gap on flavor between the burnt caramel chocolate and the crescendo of the chilies. 4 yr. old: “I don’t like it. It’s too spicy” (Note: she also feels candy…

Vosges – Mo’s Bacon Bar

December 31, 2007 / 0 comments

One of my current all-time favorites. 4 yr. old: “I really like this one because I like bacon bacon bacon!” A balance of applewood smoked bacon and deep milk chocolate – this is a unique taste experience. Just a touch of salt that complements the dark chocolate, which is smooth, semi-sweet and does not overpower…

Santander – Dark Chocolate, single origin Columbian

December 31, 2007 / 1 comment

Another in the trend of a single-region-focused chocolate, this particular one from Columbia has a higher cocoa content (70%) and is certified GMO-free. This definitely highlights the flavors particular to Columbian cocoa beans – darker, earthier, almost coffee like in flavor, and there’s a definite fruit highlight to it – cherry? Better mouthfeel overall. 4…

Perugina – Premium Milk Chocolate Cappuccino

December 31, 2007 / 0 comments

This is a filling-type chocolate bar, and the cappuccino filling is definitely one of the more yummy ones. Not quite as liquid as the filling in a Lindt truffle, but for taste, it’s on par. Chocolate is smooth and sweet, no bitter aftertaste, creamy subtle coffee flavor. Found this in a local Giant supermarket. Overall:…

E. Guittard – Sur Del Lago Bittersweet

December 31, 2007 / 0 comments

65% Cacao. Wrapper notes “subtle hints of red berry fruit.” Considering this is a chocolate focusing on a specific region of Venezuela, this reinforces my belief that a good chocolate blends a variety of beans to create a memorable chocolate. This tastes a little dry, or gritty on the finish. There is some ever-subtle note…

Muscat: Domain de Durban 2005 Muscat de Beaumes de Venise

December 27, 2007 / 0 comments

Medium golden color, typical syrupy consistency. Smooth, buttery feel with nose of burnt sugar more than caramel, almost like peanut brittle. Almost a bit overwhelming. Perfect match with a good stinky blue cheese.

Muscat: Two Hands Brilliant Disguise 2006 Moscato

December 27, 2007 / 0 comments

“Kind of like Sprite,” but in the light, citrus-y refreshing style. Nose full of chocolate and pear. Wonderfully bubbly and surprisingly light in color.

Finally got around to trying this wine, and was I pleasantly surprised.
